Echo Echo Dance Theatre Company is one of the leading dance companies in Northern Ireland. Offering a major programme of performance as well as educational activities and training for professionals, the company has been delighting audiences since 1997.
Echo Echo received National Lottery funding from Legacy Trust UK to help build a lasting sporting and cultural legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The grant was used to produce a performance that linked sports and dance.
The company wanted to do something unexpected so chose the theme of chess. The choreographer joined a chess club to learn how to play and several workshops were carried out in local schools and youth clubs. The resulting piece, titled The Chess Piece, starred six professional dancers and young people from the Derry-Londonderry area. The moves were based on classic chess games and set to live music on a visually impressive 12-metre-square chessboard. It was performed at Lottery-funded The Guildhall in Derry-Londonderry to rave reviews. “[It] is beautifully captivating, intense and at times very funny…an extraordinary piece of theatre,” wrote one reviewer.
