Hart Neighbourhood Centre provides essential guidance, support and motivation for young people between the ages of 14 and 24. The education it offers is designed especially for young people who may have had difficulties at school and are not in employment or training. Thanks to The National Lottery, it set up ‘Fresh Start’, a training project in hospitality where young people aged 16 and above could learn about the catering business.
The ‘Fresh Start’ scheme introduced many young people to catering, and taught them how to cook for others. Those involved provided a meal service at local residential homes and buffets for community groups. Participants enjoyed the ‘live’ work experience, being guided by a qualified Chef and interacting with customers.
Training took place in kitchens in residential homes, so many elderly people benefited from tasting the home-made, freshly cooked meals at a low price.
The National Lottery funded project gave many young people interesting work experience and helped them to feel more empowered, find work and play a positive role in the Hart community.
