About the project

Here, everything from the landscape, architecture and beautiful interiors were designed by the great writer himself.

This historic building has received £4.85 million of National Lottery funding to transform it into a leading tourist attraction.

Jason Dyer, chief executive of the Abbotsford Trust, says, “This money was part of an £11.4million restoration project, and enabled us to make the house wind and watertight, as well as create a new visitor centre and provide modern facilities. “This is one of only three houses in the world to be designed from scratch by the very famous person who then went on to live in the place. “It is a hodgepodge of architectural styles, and inside the story of this country’s very identity comes to life through the thousands of books and artefacts it houses.”
