The London Bus Theatre Company provides schools and colleges with drama and video workshops on issues such as bullying, drugs, alcohol and anti-social behaviour. Bas Vegas worked with residents from Basildon and Billericay in Essex to produce their own film, due for release in 2013.
The Bas Vegas project was so successful in engaging large numbers of people that crime rates have reportedly dropped in the district.
Young carer, Dean, 18, saw a leaflet inviting residents to take part in January 2010. Although he was interested in acting he wasn’t sure what his options were. Coming from a low income family he felt his opportunities were limited. But Bas Vegas offered Dean a place on the advanced drama training and he flourished. So much so, he was cast as one of the leading roles in the film.
Dean has now become a Special Constable for The Metropolitan Police. He says: "Bas Vegas has been great for increasing my employability and enhancing my CV. It offered me training, volunteering opportunities, and a very bright future.”
One resident says: “Bas Vegas has become like a second family. Everyone supports each other and some of us have made friends for life. We can’t wait for the release now, so everyone around the UK can enjoy our hard work.”
Bas Vegas was a semi-finalist in the 2012 National Lottery Awards.
