The group was first set up after a life changing moment when William met Derek, a young man with profound and multiple learning difficulties.

Derek was trying to play a very battered and broken guitar, so William offered him his own guitar and then took up a wooden flute before the pair made what William describes as ‘an intense and joyful musical connection.’

It became to William that Derek could share his music given the right opportunity. He just needed an instrument that suited him.

He realised by creating useable, adaptable instruments and accessible workshops everyone could benefit from music.

The experience prompted him to begin making specially designed bespoke instruments, including a zither and a marimba that could be played by wheelchair users.

This year his work was celebrated when he received a doctorate based on Joy of Sound’s research and its projects delivery.

He describes the moment as the crowning of a very beautiful process that has been totally driven by the group’s participants.
