The adventure never ends for Adrenaline Alley as project stars on National TV

13th December 2013

Young people who enjoy themselves at urban sports centre Adrenaline Alley in Northamptonshire will appear on this Saturday’s National Lottery Live, 21:55pm, BBC One.

Adrenaline Alley is a National Lottery funded extreme sports park which offers a secure environment for young people in Corby to participate in urban activities.

The project was founded by Mandy Young, inspired by her son John’s love of skateboarding. John had struggled through his childhood due to a brain tumour, but made friends through his love of skateboarding.

One night he was attacked by bullies who were aware of his condition. Mandy and her family were determined to turn the experience into a positive one, by creating a safe place for young people to go. With help from the National Lottery, over the past year Adrenaline Alley has trebled in size and averages 600 visitors every weekend.

John died on 17 September 2010 aged 24 years, Adrenaline Alley is his legacy.

Mandy says “With over £43,000 National Lottery funding, we have been able to adapt ramps and have specialized equipment for disabled youths, which means that everyone can now partake in the extreme sports on offer.”

“Harry, a wheelchair bound teenager, and Samantha who has special needs, both love taking part in all the activities on offer thanks to National Lottery funding. They will both be joining me, my daughter and Adrenaline Alley staff on the National Lottery Live.”

“I feel really excited about the appearance; it’s a great way to raise awareness of Adrenaline Alley and thank National Lottery players for their part in our success.”

“It wasn’t easy for me to set up Adrenaline Alley; I always say I’m a woman in a man’s world. I’ve faced some big hurdles due to stereotypes, but I suppose I’ve proved the doubters wrong!”

Jackie O’Sullivan, spokesperson for the National Lottery, said “National Lottery funding benefits a huge range of projects all over the UK, and Adrenaline Alley is a fantastic example of how National Lottery players are changing people’s lives for the better.”

“National Lottery players raise an astounding £33 million each and every week for projects like Adrenaline Alley, and since 1994 an amazing £30 billion has been raised to help a great variety of projects across the UK. There really is something for everyone.”
