Dundee resource centre praised for empowering local muslim women

29th March 2019

Supported by National Lottery funding, Dundee resource centre AMINA helps address key issues and needs of local Muslim women

Through the sharing sessions – which let the women take the lead and ownership of activities by delivering sessions to the rest of the group – they are given a chance to learn from one another, improve their English skills, increase their confidence and build a support network.

Sana Zaveri, Inspire, Connect and Enable’s Project Officer at AMINA, said: “These sessions allow Muslim women in the community to learn and share their knowledge in a supportive environment. It has been amazing to watch these women fully immerse themselves in the activities and lead others.”

The groups have hosted more than six sessions to date, including Arab cuisine cooking, cupcake decorating and origami flower making, with 20 scheduled for 2019 alone.

Samina Ansari, Chief Executive of AMINA, added: “The National Lottery funding has given us the resource to develop our services and respond to the needs of Muslim and Minority Ethnic Women in Dundee. We have already started to see the impact of our work in the Dundee community and how vital these activities are to building support networks whilst increasing the confidence of women involved.”

More than 7,500 National Lottery grants have been invested into arts, heritage, sport and community projects in Dundee, Angus, Fife and Perth and Kinross since 1994.
