RORY MCILROY CRAZY GOLF SCORECARD MARKS HOLE-IN-ONE FOR NATIONAL LOTTERY FUNDING

20th January 2014

Monday, January 20, 2014: A Rory McIlroy crazy golf scorecard has been released online as part of a new National Lottery campaign. The scorecard, which shows Rory scoring 18 straight hole-in-ones, is part of the ‘Just Imagine’ campaign to raise awareness of the massive impact that £31 billion in Good Cause funding has had across the UK since the first National Lottery draw 20 years ago this year.

In 2005, the year Rory McIlroy turned 16 years old, he was awarded £9,000 of National Lottery funding, via Sport Northern Ireland to the Golfing Union of Ireland UB, in order to aid his development as a promising player. Rory is one of hundreds of talented young people in Northern Ireland, and across the whole of the UK, to receive National Lottery funding to help him fulfil his sporting potential.

Now one of the world’s most talented golfers, Rory has shown considerable support and investment to charity and in particular, The Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children (NICFC) after selecting it as the first beneficiary of The Rory Foundation. The NICFC is also a National Lottery funded project – showing that what goes around, comes around!

The NICFC has received more than £500,000 from the Big Lottery Fund and the old Community Fund. The charity offers practical and emotional support to children, teenagers and young adults aged up to 24 living with cancer as well as their parents, guardians and siblings. They also offer support to children and young people whose parent or guardian has cancer.

National Lottery funding to charities in Northern Ireland stands at almost £1 billion, whilst funding for sport in the North tops £130 million.

The scorecard was released on www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk on Day 20 of ‘Just Imagine’, an innovative digital and social media campaign that is using a range of techniques to encourage the public to consider an alternative reality of what might have been if the National Lottery had not funded £31 billion across more than 420,000 arts, sport, heritage and voluntary projects across the UK. The first phase of the campaign sees 31 items released daily through January – one for each day of the month and each £1 billion of funding.

To enable people to learn more about National Lottery funded projects in their area, the National Lottery has launched a ‘Good Cause Finder’. To see projects in your area, or to find out more about Just Imagine January, visit www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk
