The Pump - History of Grime

This Birmingham charity supports the development of young people, especially those experiencing disadvantage and isolation. The History of Grime is one of their music projects being supported by the National Lottery funding

Everything about The Pump revolves around young people and giving them open access to a youth work hub where they can develop their creativity, learn skills to help find employment, have fun and find a listening ear.

The charity’s base in East Birmingham was designed for young people by young people, their projects and initiatives are inspired by them, and they offer a range of projects for young people keen to explore their own cultures.

One of these is The History of Grime, which was conceived by The Pump’s aspiring musicians who wanted to learn more about the genre, particularly its impact on youth culture and fashion.

Grime music is especially important to attendees at The Pump, where they are able to come and lay down their own tracks and beats at regular music evenings.

Birmingham and the West Midlands also has the biggest grime scene outside of London.

The project started by exploring grime in an informal way by coming together to produce music, while also having an ongoing dialogue around the sessions.

Around 30 young people from a local secondary school took part in the initial music sessions, and 36 students spent the summer designing a large art piece with the support of a community artist.

Next, a cohort of 10 art and design students will be curating a History of Grime design exhibition planned for later in 2019.

The National Lottery has been a key supporter of this amazing youth project, where no doubt some talented grime stars of the future will emerge.
