York Minster Revealed

York Minster Revealed was a major, five year project which included one of the largest conservation and restoration projects of its kind in Europe. The initiative included replacing and repairing stonework on the cathedral’s 600-year-old East End and protecting and repairing parts of the Great East Window, the country’s largest single expanse of medieval stained glass. As well as conservation, the project transformed the visitor experience and opened up access to the Minster.

York Minster Revealed is a major five year project which included one of the largest conservation and restoration projects of its kind in Europe – repairing the cathedral’s medieval East End and Great East Window.

Central to the project was conserving and reinstating the 600 year old Great East Window, the country's largest single expanse of medieval stained glass. On 2 January 2018, the final panel was returned to the world-famous masterpiece, 10 years after all 311 panels were removed by York Glaziers Trust.

Conservators at the Trust have spent around 92,400 hours meticulously conserving each piece as part of an £11.5 million project, £9.8 million of which came from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

This was a once in a lifetime project for the team and it was a huge privilege to be involved in this important milestone in the Minster’s history. The work undertaken as part of this project will ensure this masterpiece is preserved for hundreds of years to come.”

Sarah Brown, Director at York Glaziers Trust

Education and community outreach has also been an element of the project, with funding enabling a state-of-the-art museum to be created in the Undercroft, chronicling 2,000 years of history.

Neil Sanderson, Director of the York Minster Fund, says: “The National Lottery funding has made an incredible difference to York Minster – transforming the experience of visiting the cathedral, helping us forge new partnerships and relationships and protecting our medieval stained glass and stonework for generations to come.”
