This project received a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, which awards money raised by National Lottery players to industrial, maritime and transport projects that support communities to retain and celebrate the buildings, ships and technology that helped to shape the modern world. With the Lottery’s help, disused or damaged buildings, boats and even train carriages have been brought back into use as museum exhibits or museums themselves. Some have even been given a new lease of life as community facilities e.g. a former railway station at Richmond in Yorkshire now features a cinema, a restaurant and an art gallery! Support is also given to volunteers to carry out important tasks at industrial sites – from restoring, maintaining and operating machinery, to staffing visitor facilities, and providing tours and educational activities. In addition to this, the Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded grants to projects at all nine of the UK’s industrial and maritime World Heritage Sites, including the Ironbridge Gorge, Maritime Greenwich, Stonehenge, Edinburgh Old and New Towns and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.
