Make a super sustainable birdfeeder with Rosie Ramsey and Cumbernauld Living Landscapes

Rosie meets Katie – Trainee at Cumbernauld Living Landscapes (CLL) in Scotland. CLL is working to improve Cumbernauld’s green spaces for both people and wildlife, helping everyone in the community connect with nature on their doorstep. Since COVID-19, their team of ‘Nature Ninjas’ have been leading workshops at events digitally via their website.

Watch the video to find out how you can make a sustainable birdfeeder to hang in your garden, out your window or in your local park.

Items:

  • Stick/branch (approx. 40cm long)
  • 1 x apple
  • Sunflower seeds or seed of your choice
  • String (1 metre long)
  • Scissors
  • Pencil

Instructions:

  1. Snap the stick in two, use the pencil to poke a hole in one half of the apple and put one half of the stick in one side of the apple and the other half in the other side (so it makes a perch for birds to land on).
  2. Stick the seeds into the apple ( you can make a fancy design with them if you want to or just put them in randomly)
use the scissors to cut the string and tie a knot to the sticks at each side of the apple so you can hang it up.
  3. Bird feeder is complete!

Make sure to hang it higher up to make it harder for cats to reach it when birds land on it.
You can hang it in a tree, on a balcony or from a window sill.
