Believe In Me: The Guardians of South Asian History

Amazing Starts Here is our brand-new podcast, hosted by Love Island winner Amber Rose-Gill. Each episode uncovers a real-life superhero story, all empowered by The National Lottery.

Amber Rose-Gill with Taiba Aqueel and Kiran Sahota.

In the third episode of Amazing Starts Here, Amber meets Kiran Sahota and Taiba Aqueel from ‘Believe In Me’ to talk about the side of history that gets ignored by the curriculum, like South Asian history and how they are educating young people through after school programmes.

Believe in Me is a National Lottery funded charity based in Birmingham that through different projects, uncovers the untold stories of British South Asian history, workings with young people of South Asian heritage, like Taiba, to discover their History in ways that they aren’t taught in mainstream education.

During this episode Kiran, Heritage and Education consultant, tell us about her latest National Lottery funded programme Indian Women and War. Kiran has been working with a team of young people to explore the impact of the Second World War on Indian women and creating a documentary based on their findings that will go on a national tour.

Taiba, a History and Politics student, tells us how important Kiran has been in her educational development. Thanks to Kiran, she’s been inspired to pursue a career in Hhistory, to help break down stereotypes of historians being white and male.

Thanks to National Lottery players, more than £30 million goes to good causes across the UK every week, which in turn helps charities like Believe In Me continue to carry out incredible work in their communities.
