Glasgow Gladiators

Glasgow Gladiators Disability Sports Club gives people the opportunity to play powerchair football and boccia, from complete beginners to potential Paralympians. It is transforming sporting opportunities for people in Glasgow, and giving them the opportunity to compete at social and competitive levels.

Glasgow Gladiators Disability Sports Club gives people the opportunity to play powerchair football and boccia, from complete beginners to potential Paralympians.

The club was founded in May 2016 by three fathers of disabled young people who were playing for an existing powerchair team, to offer more opportunities for training and competing. Boccia was added as a second sport in 2017.

Glasgow Gladiators exists to provide a social outlet for disabled people in the city and the surrounding areas. Isolation can be a problem for people with disabilities, often leading to poor mental health, and there’s often a lack of provision for them, especially in sport. The club has weekly sessions, with members aged 17 to 69.

National Lottery funding helped the club buy six new high-spec powerchairs for players who can handle speeds of up to 10km/h, which are also of a standard to make them eligible for selection to the Scotland squad.

The club has also been able to employ two new coaches and new equipment is under development, including a ten-pin bowling ramp, which will add a third sport when it is finished in September 2019.

National Lottery funding has vastly improved the equipment and coaching on offer, which has boosted the morale and the enjoyment of the players. It also means potential new members are no longer faced with raising £5,000 for a chair to play in."
