Lisa Power MBE
Lisa Power is a prominent British sexual health and LGBTQIA+ rights campaigner, having been dubbed ‘the matriarch of LGBTQIA+ activism’.
She is also Policy Director of Terrence Higgins Trust and Secretary General of ILGA, the global network and was the co-founder of Stonewall. As the first openly LGBT person to speak at the United Nations, she continues to work and volunteer in Wales with Fast Track Cymru and Pride Cymru and on the Board of Queer Britain, the national LGBTQIA+ museum.
Lisa coordinated the Icons and Allies Project with The National Lottery Heritage Fund, a project that unearths and honours trailblazing LGBTQIA+ figures and allies from across Wales, and continues to inspire people seven years on from inception. Submissions poured in from across Wales, with names of men and women from as early as the sixth century, with the nation’s patron saint himself making the longlist.
Lisa said: “Heritage is important to me. I’m 69 and I’ve been involved in the LGBT+ community since the 1970s. Over this period, I’ve watched people lose our history and get our history wrong. Previous generations of that history had been repressed, hidden or misrepresented, including in Wales. With the support of National Lottery funding, we've been able not just to unearth this, but also to fully appreciate how rich our heritage is. There are lessons from the past that all of us could learn from, to avoid our heritage being hidden again.”
