127 Years to Women's Rugby Glory: How Historic Legacy Created Modern Female International Success
Dalkeith RFC's extraordinary growth into a women's rugby regional powerhouse exemplifies how historic clubs are embracing female sport development. Their comprehensive approach to women's and girls' rugby - spanning across all ages - now represents one of Scotland's most inclusive female rugby development models.
The evolution in women's rugby has been remarkable, with female youth players representing the East in regional competitions. This commitment to women's rugby excellence recently produced international recognition with Alina Prokopenko's selection for Scotland's U18 Women's Six Nations squad.
Dalkeith's pioneering women's rugby development forms part of The National Lottery's summer of sport campaign, celebrating how over £6 billion invested in more than 90,000 grassroots clubs and organisations across the UK has been game-changing for women and girls' sport. Through sportscotland's annual £750,000 investment to Scottish Rugby - this funding has enabled Scotland's most historic clubs to create international female talent development programmes in what has become a monumental year for women's sport.
"The funding made available through the National Lottery has allowed us to invest in coach and player education that has been the cornerstone of our success in recent seasons, helping us produce female players and coaches across the youth and senior teams. Without this investment our reach into the schools’ network would not be possible and we would not have been able to provide these opportunities to our local community," explains Jason Hendrie, Director of Rugby at Dalkeith RFC.
At Kings Park, revolutionary developments in women's rugby are taking place. The club's girls' programmes have achieved National League qualification, competing against established powerhouses including Stirling County, Dundee, and Currie Chieftains - representing breakthrough success in female rugby development.
The club's women's rugby philosophy extends from their Little Ruggers (age 2) through to competitive senior women's rugby, providing a complete pathway for women and girls from youth to senior rugby and welcoming female newcomers alongside developing elite talent. The senior women have achieved remarkable success, winning a league and National Women's Bowl double in only their second season, and continuing to grow from strength to strength.
Stevie Halliday, Director of Youth Rugby, and Jason Hendrie, Development Officer, oversee programmes that apply a depth of rugby knowledge to creating opportunities specifically for female players, including the development of female leaders within the club in coaching positions across the youth programme.
As the Women's Rugby World Cup showcases international female rugby excellence, Dalkeith's success in developing players like Alina Prokopenko demonstrates how Scottish clubs are building the grassroots foundation essential for future women's international success.
