The Science Museum is the home of human ingenuity and its collection is an important record of scientific, technological and medical achievements from across the world.

The museum aims to make sense of the science that shapes our lives, inspiring visitors with iconic objects, fascinating exhibitions and stories of incredible achievement.

It is one of London’s top attractions, visited by 3.3 million people annually from Britain and abroad, and more young people visit on educational trips each year than any other UK museum.

National Lottery funding has played a vital role in the evolution of the Science Museum over the last 25 years.

This investment helped to build the Wellcome Wing, a “theatre of science” exploring contemporary themes like molecular genetics, artificial intelligence and information technology.

The 10,000sqm extension, which opened in 2000, includes temporary and permanent exhibition space, a 450-seat IMAX theatre, a 250-seat lecture theatre, conference facilities and places to eat.

Permanent galleries Making the Modern World and Information Age, which house remarkable objects like the Apollo 10 command module and an experimental television receiver used by John Logie Baird, have both been created with the help of the National Lottery.

Similarly, a grant helped to acquire the Sokol spacesuit worn by the first Briton in space, Helen Sharman, during her flights to and from the MIR space station in 1991.

More recently, the National Lottery is helping to create the new Medicine Galleries, which will open in 2019, and will support a new gallery exploring London’s unique role in the evolution of scientific thinking between 1550 and 1800.
