See My Voice

The programme provides a platform for young leaders to articulate their opinions on important social issues such as inclusion, accessibility and equal opportunities in sport and physical activity.

The idea for the ‘See My Voice’ project came about as many young visually impaired people were telling British Blind Sport (BBS) that they felt frustrated, and often felt ‘unheard’ by people in authority. As one young person said ‘Just because I can’t see, it doesn’t mean I can’t hear what is being said about me, my disability and plans for my future. No-one seems to hear my voice’.

Now into its second year, the aim of the See My Voice programme is to link more than 100 young leaders into sports volunteering roles alongside a bespoke leadership programme, both of which, develop their life skills, and enable them to share their opinions and experiences to shape the future of the sporting landscape for visually impaired young people.

National Lottery funding has enabled BBS to provide dedicated mentoring and individualised support to its See My Voice young leaders. As a result, each young leader benefits from a personalised development plan which offers tailored volunteering options matching their interests, aspirations and specific needs. The programme has developed a nationally recognised and accredited leadership qualification which is accessible and achievable for people of all sight levels, enhancing its Young Leaders’ skillset and employability prospects.
