Tiger Bay Amateur Boxing Club

Wasem Said opened Tiger Bay Amateur Boxing Club two years ago, in tribute to his former mentor, champion boxer Pat Thomas.

Wasem and the coaches at the club work to combat antisocial behaviour amongst young people and prevent extremism and Islamophobia by creating a cohesive community of all religions, races, and nationalities.

Wasem himself has personal experience of the problems these young people face. After losing his dad at 15, he became involved with gangs, and saw violence and drugs first hand on the streets. Starting mixed martial arts and training helped him regain his old life and inspired him to help others.

Tiger Bay ABC now has more than 150 young members, and during lockdown, club members were delivering 120 food parcels a week to vulnerable local people.
