Breaking Barriers: How AFC Leyton Has Become East London's Female Football Powerhouse
In 2015, when AFC Leyton was founded as an independent female-only football club in East London, the landscape for women's football looked very different. Nearly a decade later, this trailblazing club has grown into one of the country's largest female football clubs, with hundreds of members across all age groups.
What sets AFC Leyton apart is its unique structure. Unlike nearly all other girls' and women's teams, AFC Leyton operates completely independently from any male football club - meaning every penny received is reinvested directly into girls' training, matches, and experiences.
Building Excellence
The club's commitment to excellence has been recognised at the highest levels. In 2021, AFC Leyton was named FA Grassroots Club of the Year, whilst maintaining FA accreditation - an award given only to clubs rigorously assessed as well-run, sustainable, and prioritising child protection and quality coaching.
Operating across two distinct pathways, AFC Leyton caters for everyone from absolute beginners through to elite level players. Their recreational "pay and play" sessions welcome all abilities with no commitment required, while their competitive teams span ages 4 to 17 for youth players and 18+ for women.
The results speak for themselves. The club's first team recently won the Greater London Women's Football League Division 1, securing promotion to the Premier Division. Meanwhile, their U16Ws, played in the JPL for their first ever season, and won the league as well as their remaining youth teams have claimed numerous league titles and tournament victories across London and Essex.
The Club is also a flagship (1 of 12 in the UK) for The Greater Game, which is a FA led programme to improve the health and wellbeing of young people across the national. TGG is made specially for those aged 12-16 years under four key elements: Move well, think well, eat well and sleep well.
Developing Future Stars
Perhaps most remarkably, AFC Leyton has established itself as a genuine pathway to professional football. Former players have progressed to academies at West Ham, Charlton Athletic, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur. In 2024, ex-AFC Leyton player Gesa Marashi made her debut for London City Lionesses in the Women's Championship, marking her arrival with a goal.
Many other former players currently compete in the FA Women's National League, demonstrating the club's ability to develop talent at the highest grassroots levels.
All coaches are UEFA qualified with majority with UEFA C license and two on UEFA B license.
National Lottery Support
The club's growth has been supported by strategic National Lottery funding, part of the £30 million raised each week by National Lottery players for good causes throughout the UK. AFC Leyton received £10,000 from The National Lottery Community Fund for their "Leyton Active" programme, which runs health and fitness activities for children and women in the local community.
Additionally, the club secured £6,000 from Sport England's COVID-19 Community Emergency Fund, helping maintain operations during the pandemic and ensuring continued opportunities for female players in East London.
Community Impact
AFC Leyton's impact extends far beyond football achievements. Based in one of London's most culturally diverse areas, the club proudly reflects this diversity in its players, staff, and coaching team. The organisation has positioned itself as explicitly anti-racist, anti-sexist, and anti-discriminatory, actively working to challenge discrimination in football.
"We believe girls' and women's football can inspire personal confidence in all girls and women," the club states. "Coming together to play with others from diverse backgrounds encourages openness, tolerance and a greater understanding."
The club operates from the principle that "we do not develop teams at AFC Leyton, we develop individuals" - a philosophy that has seen them grow from a startup organisation to a recognised force in women's football.
Looking Forward
As AFC Leyton continues to expand its reach, the club represents a powerful example of what can be achieved when communities come together with proper support. From their Wildcats sessions for the youngest players through to their championship-winning first team, they have created a complete pathway for female football in East London.
With National Lottery funding continuing to support grassroots sport across the UK, clubs like AFC Leyton demonstrate how strategic investment can transform communities and create opportunities that simply didn't exist before.
Their journey from a small independent club to FA recognition and professional player development shows the potential that exists when barriers are removed and every penny is invested in empowering the next generation of female footballers.
AFC Leyton operates from East London, providing football opportunities for girls aged 4-17 and women 18+. The club is a registered Community Interest Company and FA accredited club. For more information, visit their website or contact chair@afcleyton.co.uk
