Building Champions: How Bishopton RFC Creates Pathways to Rugby Excellence
In January 2018, Bishopton RFC launched their women's section with a simple yet effective philosophy: every woman deserves the opportunity to discover rugby excellence, regardless of experience. As the Women's Rugby World Cup demonstrates the global growth of women's rugby, this Renfrewshire club proves that inclusive approaches and competitive success flourish together.
Bishopton RFC is supporting The National Lottery in celebrating 30 years of transformational investment into women and girls' sport, showcasing how grassroots investment creates the foundation for international success.
Scotland Legend Visits Club
Scotland legend Donna Kennedy, the country's most-capped player with 115 appearances, visited Bishopton RFC to witness how £750,000 of annual National Lottery funding through sportscotland is transforming women's rugby across the country.
"The funding of grassroots rugby is where it all starts," Kennedy explained. "Every Scotland player started at a club like Bishopton, so that's why the support is so vital. Each year £750,000 is invested in grassroots rugby across Scotland, that is sensational."
Innovative Development System
Bishopton's women's and girls' structure offers dual pathways through both traditional contact rugby and non-contact Touch options, ensuring every female player finds her place. Combined with practical initiatives like their community "boot bin" and subsidised kit programmes, these innovations remove barriers that traditionally prevented women from accessing rugby.
Head Coach Stacey MacLeod explains: "We are such a small club and that funding allows us to get more kit, be able to have more female coaches and get them involved. It just gives us that opportunity to build that girls' game."
The results speak volumes. The club's Ladies team achieved second place in their league despite playing competitive rugby for just over six years. Many current female players arrived with no previous rugby experience yet have developed into accomplished competitors.
Complete Talent Pathway
Their Girls' Midi Section, launched in 2021, welcomes secondary school girls every Tuesday evening at Renfrew Leisure Centre. This structured pathway ensures young talent develops skills in supportive environments before progressing to senior women's rugby.
Sixteen-year-old player Megan captures the inspiration: "Amazing honestly because you can see how much the game has grown in a couple of years and it's really good to have role models that I can look up to and hopefully be like them in the future."
Alan Falconer, Scottish Rugby West Area Director, praised the club's approach: "You see Bishopton here delivering a huge amount of community activity and driving the game in an inclusive way."
National Lottery Foundation
The £750,000 annual investment has enabled Scottish Rugby to develop community clubs across the country, creating pathways that simply didn't exist before. This investment forms part of The National Lottery's broader commitment to women's sport, with over £6 billion invested in more than 90,000 grassroots clubs and organisations across the UK over 30 years.
"It's massively important because if you can see it, you can be it," Kennedy reflected. "When I was young, there were no role models apart from men. You can actually see now that there's women rugby players out there on the world stage who these girls can aspire to be."
Dougie Millen from sportscotland emphasised the impact: "Investment from the National Lottery from sportscotland is building environments where rugby is for everyone." This philosophy is perfectly demonstrated at Bishopton, where National Lottery investment in women and girls' rugby development has created opportunities that simply didn't exist before.
Building Tomorrow's Champions
Seven-year-old Thea Phillips embodies the future potential. When asked if she wants to play for Scotland, her immediate "yes" demonstrates how the pathway now exists for the next generation to dream big.
"She's got a pathway to help her achieve that, especially here at Bishopton, with the support they've had," Kennedy concluded.
From complete beginners to competitive champions, Bishopton RFC proves that with the right support and inclusive philosophy, rugby excellence truly is for everyone. As the Women's Rugby World Cup demonstrates the incredible growth of women's rugby, clubs like Bishopton showcase how National Lottery investment creates the pathways that make elite success possible.
