University of Nottingham Wheelchair Basketball

Being able to enjoy as many aspects of university as possible in an inclusive environment is paramount to those less physically able, so the students’ union has created a Wheelchair Basketball Club

Playing sport, whether as a professional or an amateur, is a great way to keep fit, socialise and become part of a team.

This can be an important part of uni life for students, but may be less accessible for those who are physically disabled.

The students’ union at the University of Nottingham recognised the need for inclusivity across the board, but particularly in sport, and set up the Wheelchair Basketball Club (UoNWBB) to give players of all physical abilities the chance to take part.

With the support of National Lottery funding, they have been able to raise participation through a programme of leaflets, social media campaigning, and open access events.

The UoNWBB club prides itself on being inclusive and welcoming players of all standards to competitive wheelchair basketball, from complete beginners to seasoned professionals.

The club can also provide a range of basketball chairs that cater for players of all sizes.

For beginners, they offer the Engage programme, aimed at those who want to try out a new sport in a friendly and social environment.

For more advanced players they organise training sessions that run drills aimed at improving skillsets in a competitive environment.

The club play tournaments both in Nottingham and around the country, including varsity games with Nottingham Trent University.
