V&A Dundee
V&A Dundee is Scotland’s first design museum and is increasing Dundee’s growing global reputation for creative innovation and excellence. It is a world-class centre for design and culture in Scotland, in an architecturally significant building, and saw over half a million visitors in its first six months.
The hotly anticipated V&A Dundee opened in September 2018 to rave reviews and is poised to become one of Scotland’s most popular attractions. National Lottery funding gave a substantial boost to the project, which took three and a half years to build and was also backed by the Scottish Government, Dundee City Council and other funders.
The striking three-storey waterfront building was designed by renowned Japanese architects Kengo Kuma & Associates following an international competition and has been created to be ‘a living room for the city’. The space is as much social as educational, with the curved concrete walls intended to give the impression of a Scottish cliff face, while geothermal energy makes the building as carbon neutral as possible.
The new museum has both an international and national focus, with the Scottish Design Galleries featuring 300 exhibits drawn from the V&A’s collections as well as other museums and private collections.
Inclusivity is key at V&A Dundee, with events and activities for all ages of children and families, and tours and facilities for a range of access needs. It has also been working with Amina Muslim Women’s Resource Centre in Dundee to train local women to deliver inclusive museum tours in English as well as a range of community languages including Arabic, Hindi and Punjabi.
