Celebrating our most successful Winter Games

24th February 2026

A superb silver medal in the men’s curling was yet another memorable moment from Milano Cortina 2026, an event that will go down as the most successful Winter Olympic Games in Team GB history.

Team GB makes Winter Olympic history

Team Mouat matched their achievement in Beijing four years ago when they were edged out 9-6 by Canada in a tightly contested final. The result marks back-to-back Olympic silvers for Bruce Mouat, Grant Hardie, Bobby Lammie and Hammy McMillan.

Overall, Britain finished 15th in the medal table in Italy, its greatest performance in the 102 years of the Games.

On the final day of Milano Cortina 2026, Zoe Atkin gave British fans another reason to cheer when she won a brilliant bronze medal in the women’s freeski halfpipe. Leading after her opening run, she finished just 0.50 points off silver with a score of 92.50.

Zoe’s achievement took Team GB’s medal tally to five, equalling the tally from Sochi in 2014 and Pyeongchang in 2018. But Milano Cortina will be remembered as the first time we have won more than one gold medal at a single Games.

Because of You, The National Lottery has been able to invest over £200M in winter sports since 1995. It has supported elite athletes, grassroots clubs, and world-class facilities in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, enabling champions to emerge from communities across the UK.

Team GB’s chef de mission Eve Muirhead told BBC Sport, “These Games have been amazing, and a history-making Games.

“They have really proven that we are capable, that we have so much potential and we’re growing. We’re a growing winter nation, which is really exciting.”

Matt Weston (pictured), who became the first British athlete to win two golds at the same Winter Games with his double skeleton success in Cortina, carried the British flag at the closing ceremony. He was joined by snowboarder Charlotte Bankes, who won Britain’s first ever gold on snow.

Elsewhere on the final weekend, Brad Hall’s four-man bobsleigh crew finished seventh overall and Andrew Musgrave signed off his Games with a superb sixth place in the 50km cross-country race. His effort matches the best-ever British finish in the event.

Team GB’s Milano Cortina statistics make for exciting reading.

  • 5 medals - equaling our best Winter Olympic return.
  • 3 gold medals - the first time we have won more than one gold at a single Winter Games.
  • 24 top 10 finishes across the program.
  • A record 5 fourth-place finishes - demonstrating genuine depth and breadth of competitiveness across winter sport.

Milano-Cortina 2026 has also captured the nation’s attention, with peak television audiences of 5.5M for the men’s curling final and more than 4M for our gold medal performances in skeleton.

The action is not over. The Winter Paralympics begin on 6th March, bringing another opportunity for extraordinary performances, national pride and inspiration.
